FTP ("File Transfer Protocol") software is the means to upload (i.e. send a file from your computer to the web server) and download (send a file from the web server to your computer) computer files to a many web sites including some of our own web hosting services. (FTP access is not given to those with the Introductory hosting package and as such, they will need to "upgrade" by clicking "upgrade hosting" to the right of their domain name after they login at www.DomainNameSanity.com/login.php.) Common reasons to upload files:

You created a web site using software on your computer and you want to place it on a web server.
You have an image on your computer which you want to show at your web site so upload a copy of that image on the web site server.

Downloading files is something that people don't frequently do but there are excellent reasons to do so:

You should always have a back-up of your computer files because you never know what can happen. Although all hosting companies make back-up copies in case of some problem, you should be prepared yourself.
Whenever you change your web site, there is a chance for you to make an error. The easiest solution is to create a back-up just prior to your making any change so if something goes wrong, you can always restore the back-up you make.

We have arranged for you to get a free copy of "WS_FTP LE" software. The software is free provided you use it for personal use (which we know you will). This software only runs on PC's running "Windows". Before, we you download the software, we want to give you a few instructions on installation and use. Your first step will be to follow the instructions provided to you in the e-mail which will be sent in a few minutes. Upon clicking the link to download the program, you will be prompted to save the application. You should save it to any convenient place on your hard drive.

After the software is downloaded, just locate the file "ws_ftple.exe" and double click it. Then follow the installation instructions.

After the software is installed, you should start the "WS_FTP LE" software. You will then click "new" to create a new connection. If you are going to connect to our hosting service, use the following settings (which are also used on any program that includes FTP):

On the left side of the screen, you will see your computer's files. You can change folders as you choose. On the right side of the screen are the web server folders. You can also change folders, if applicable. The left and right arrow in the middle are the means to copy folders one way or the other. You simply click the folder you want to copy and then click the appropriate arrow. We strongly suggest that you make a copy of all files/folders on the web server before doing anything else. Place this backup copy into a folder on your computer which will server as a back-up copy that you won't change.

If you use our template system to create your web site, the "magic" behind the template system is that for every html page the system creates it creates a parallel file with a "wnmf" extension. When you download or upload an HTML page be sure to get the matching "wnmf" page or our template system will no longer operate.
